Waterfalls There are many varied and interesting waterfalls in the vicinity of the town of Munising. All of these waterfalls are very beautiful; however, they are especially appealing during the spring when melting snow and frequent rain increases their water volume. This guide will help direct you to these waterfalls and will give you an idea of what you will encounter while visiting them.
Alger Falls: Located one mile south of Munising where Highway M-94 meets M-28. This waterfall cascades down 30 feet of rock and is easily seen along the east side of Highway M-28. Horseshoe Falls: This privately owned waterfall, located in southeast Munising, has a 20 foot free fall drop into a pool below. A natural shaped amphitheater. There is also a trout pond where visitors can feed rainbow trout. Munising Falls: This Pictured Rocks National Lake shore waterfall is located in northeast Munising across from the city hospital. A short 1/2 mile scenic hike will take you from the visitor's station along the creek valley, and over footbridges either to the base of the 50 foot waterfall to the top. Winter's cold weather often transforms this waterfall into a spectacular column of ice. Wagner Falls: Located about 1.5 miles south of Munising on Highway M-94. A short trail will lead you up the Wagner Creek Valley, to the falls. These falls are actually a series of small falls and cascades that stretch for about 100 feet. The short hike here, combined with the picturesque beauty of these falls, makes this a perfect stretching place for the road weary traveler. AuTrain Falls: Located just off the Forest Lake Road, either 8 miles south of AuTrain or 1/10 mile north of M-94. These falls consist of a series of small steps and cascades that drop about 50 feet within a 200 foot stretch. The beauty here lies not only in the falls, but also in the rapids below the falls. The parking lot is located within sound distance, and less than 100 yards, from the roaring water. Miners Falls: Located within the Pictured Rocks National Lake shore, about 3.5 miles north of H-58, on H-13 towards the Miners Castle. A foot trail will direct you 1 mile east to the head of Miners Basin. From here you can enjoy the breathtaking view that looks out over Lake Superior ad over the falls flowing down into the basin. Rock River Falls: Located within the Hiawatha National Forest approximately 5 miles northwest of Chatham. This waterfall drops over a sandstone ledge into a pool 20 feet below. At the edges of the river canyon below with sandstone outcrops that have been worked by water and weather until caves 10-20 feet have formed. Beautiful ice curtains form from the cave roofs in the winter. These falls are located within the Rock River Canyon closure area, therefore, no motor vehicles are allowed. Scott Falls: Located on the south side of M-28, at the east side of Lake Superior's AuTrain Bay. Travelers along M-28 can easily see the 20 foot waterfall from the highway. Wayside Park, located directly across the highway from the falls provides safe and easy parking for those who would like to stop and get a picture. Laughing Whitefish Falls: Located on the Laughing Whitefish River, 2 1/2 miles northeast of Sundell. It has a spectacular 100 foot drop; plus its deep gorge and layered limestone walls make it one of the most beautiful in Alger County. There is a 20 minute walk into the falls.
